No spark 115 1970 V4

I have a 1970 V4 115hp Evinrude that is not getting spark. How can I check the coil and power pack to make sure they are working correctly?<br /><br />Thanks.

Is the motor mounted on a boat or on a stand? Those motors have to use the key switch to check spark. Its not like the magneto style where you can just jump a battery to the starter.

It is on the boat. The engine turns over and everything. Just no spark. I have been installing an inline spark tester, turning the ignition to ON then jumping the starter solenoid to get it to turn over. I know I am geting power to the engine from the key because the choke switch still works. Shouldn't I be getting power to the coil via the green wire when you turn the ignitoin on? This is the way cars are anyway.

Why are you jumping it at the solenoid?? Doesn't the key switch work? If not check the inline fuse at the motor. You choke is on a completely separate circuit than the engine from the key switch.

just went through this myself a few months ago. it sounds like the power pack to me a ner pack for that motor witch i'm sure is the same as mine will set you back about $380.00 plus i had to replace the disributor cap rotor and trigger wheel anouther $266.00. this is how i ckecked my powerpack. i took a test light and connected it to a good ground and put the end of the test light on the green wire that goes to the coil and truned the motor over with the key switch and each time the powerpack passes curent to the coil the test light will light up. to test the coil i went to autozone and bought a spark tester costs $8.00 and took the coil lead of at the disributor and hooked up the spark tester to the coil lead and adjusted the spark tester to 7/16" and grounded the sprk tester to a good ground have some one turn the ingnition key while you watch the test light to flash if is flashes that means the powerpack is passing curent to the coil then do the coil test and watch the spark teser to see if their is spark the spark should be a white hot spark and should jump the 7/16" ajustment that you set the spark tester at. from my understanding when these powerpacks go bad they will not do anything (no spark) but thier is other ways to test them i just found this way much but for me. as far as the coil you can messure thr resistance and it could test ok but still be bad.i would just replace it if you are having doughts about it! <br /><br />hope this helps! if their is any thing else that i can help you with let me know.<br /><br />Roger buckeye700179@yahoo.com
