I have a 1986 Mariner 115 HP 6 cyl outboard. It has been called the the 3 on 3. I currently have no spark. I have checked all connections at the coils, switch box, including stator and trigger switch. Also checked the mercury tilt switch, fuses and of course battery. Got plenty of power, no spark. I think I could muddle through a volt ohm test but I do not no what I should be looking for in the way of ohm readings if any. All ready tried once for instance I tested out the trigger and got an ohm reading of 348? I was set x2000. all other settings showed nothing. I may be missing something entirely (is thier a heat sensor?) I was giving it the entiall beginning seasopn fire up in the drive way and was kicking over to begin with but suddenly went away? Pulled a plug got gas no spark. I have an electrical schematic and should be able to test. Just need advice on how to proceed.

I don't want to come on to strong with this, but have you checked the kill switch under the key to make sure someone has not turned that on, or to the kill position?<br /><br />You said it was "kicking over and then it went away"<br />Do you mean it was running or trying to start but didn't?

Oh darn, I did not per say take a look at the kill switch with the Volt Ohm meter nor did i get my face up in the command control for a very close look but the lanyard was still in place and I have power to all systems back at the engine (if I rember right the kill switch killls all juice to the motor) and I did check for power back at the cylinoid starter and its thier. What I mean by kicking over is just that. It would catch and all most had it started once (very typical of this baby first time up in the spring) but never actually had it runnning. It would try to catch and then the starter bendix would just wind out. Then suddenly nothing? Just crank and crank. No fire no spit and sputter, pulled a plug No Spark.

One time I had been out and stopped for something or other. When I went to continue one of the motors would not start and ended up cutting the day short. Can you imagine the self anger when I got home and discovered that I had touched the shift lever just enough to disengage the neutral start switch?

Thanks guys on the kill switch. Dummyies like me can easily over look that, but for sure kill switch is not a factor. Still in the same position as original posting.

Ignitions aren't my thing, but someone else on this board, Merctech I think, said that on certain (I don't know if it applies to all) Mercurys that if you unplug the black plug where the boat plugs into the motor and jump the starter solenoid you can check for spark at the plugs. If you get spark this way the problem is in your boat not your motor, probably the ignition switch or harness. He suggested this test first.

Yeah I have eliminated the Command control center in the boat as a possible problem. I started thier first. Ignition switch kill switch all functioning. Definately in the motor.
