No Spark - 1962 Electramatic

We've been trying to crank up this 75-hp Johnson (Model # V4AL-14L, S/N: 2292845) that came with my 16-yr old son's boat. Replaced the spark plugs, wires, points, condenser, rotor and coil. Still no spark! Starter cranks strong, so I'm wondering if we're grounding out somewhere before it gets to the coil?<br /><br />We've cleaned all of the wire connections and have checked the in-line fuses. Any thoughts to try and get this thing going?<br /><br />Thanks!<br />George

That engine has automotive type ignition. If you have 12 volts being applied to the coil with the key in the on position, you should have spark considering the components you've replaced.<br /><br />I'm assuming that you do have the points gapped at .020 on the high portion of the cam. The spark should jump a 1/4" gap (rig up some kind of spark tester) with a strong blue lightning like flame.... a real SNAP!<br /><br />It's possible that the points have a coating on them, and if so, clean them with acetone or laquer thinner.

Joe,<br /><br />Points are gapped in accordance with spec. I'll try wiping off the points and checking coil voltage tomorrow. <br /><br />When we were working on it yesterday, the last thing I tried (before giving up for the day) was to check spark from the coil wire (unscrewed wire from coil at distributor). No spark. We do have a SELOC manual that shows the wiring diagram, so do I need to start tracing back? Power from key switch to starter is apparent. Is there another branch of that circuit to check? I have to admit I get totally confused with what's happening at the jbox mounted on the transom.<br /><br />George
