Recently picked up a 1971 Evinrude 60hp, model #60173C. I have no history on it. Motor turns over freely with about 150 compression on all cylinders. Motor has no spark. I've replaced the coil and cleaned and gapped the points to .010. I've tried starting the motor by disconnecting the round, main wiring harness and jumping the starter. Still no spark. I'm told that eliminates the potential of a bad ignition. I've tested the amplifier with a test light by hooking up one lead of the light to ground and the other to the blue wire for the amplifier. As I crank the motor the test light comes on so I'm guessing the amplifier is good. The plugs are the type that you don't gap. They look clean and fresh. The motor is overall very clean and all wires are in good shape with no signs of corrosion. Battery is new and cables look in good shape. What should I be testing next and how can I go about doing so? I've read most anything on this forum that I could find in regards to this motor and no spark issue. I'm not prepared to dump much money into this motor as I don't really need it. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks

guessing won't do it get yourself a maintenance manual or search the net for the info you need to fix it. Could be a bad pack or wiring problem etc...

This motor needs 12 volts to the amplifier to get spark.-----Disconnecting the big plug was futile.----Perhaps the rotor is shorted to ground.

I was told by a marine mechanic that this motor can be started without the large plug being connected and by disconnecting it and jumping the starter, if you get spark the problem is in your ignition. When I had the plug connected, I was getting 12 volts to the amplifier

In the late 70s we used to "borrow" the neighbours Boat by doing something to get it running without the Key, but we had to wrap a Rope around the Flywheel to start it. Once it was running we could use it. I can't remember if we had Neutral and Reverse, or just Forward.

Glad I wasn't your neighbor! 😊
