Hello -

I am looking for some assistance in troubleshooting the ignition on my 1972 johnson 9.5hp.

I have verified that I am getting no spark on the #2 cylinder. I have put in new spark plugs, new condensors, new coils, and new points.

Unfortunately, I still have no spark on the #2 cylinder. Can anyone provide some additional ideas for troubleshooting? Right now I'm planning on yanking the flywheel (again) and verifying everything, but would appreciate any expert advice.

thanks,
Pete

Pete, First comfirm you have connected both coils correctly.Check the points carefully to be sure
there are no shorts.Be sure they actually open and
close correctly. If you reused the plug wires be sure they are sound.Check the routing of the wires to be sure they cant short to ground.
Try swapping coils and wires between cylinders.
Even if only temporary to see if fault follows coils.

Thanks! I didn't have a spark before or after I have replaced the coil, condensor, and points. I did go in, remove the coil again, and make sure things were all hooked up right. Everything looks OK visually - including the spark plug wires (the only element of the ignition electrical system which hasn't been replaced).

Would switching the spark plug wires tell me anything (i.e. swap the two wires on the plugs)?

If the plug wires look OK after a pretty careful visual inspection, could I still have a problem that would result in no spark?

Thanks,
Pete

Cool - I made a mistake when setting the points. I am now running on both cylinders (now to do some adjustments to the carb - it stalls when I attempt to idle.)

Thanks for he assistance!

peteo
