Took boat out of storage & installed new pwr pack. No spark, on all cyl. There is 12v @ the upper terminal strip, (purple wire). No voltage readings @ any of the terminals on the pwr pack. The old pwr pack-same result. Any ideas anyone?

Tnx: Howco4

disconnect the bottom left lead. black with yellow stripe. Crank motor and check for spark. If you have spark you will have to kill the motor by using the choke. Your problem would be the keyswitch.

no spark yet?
disconnect the black/white stripe and the white/black stripe wire from powerpack(these are the "sensor" wires. There are 4 of these wires). Ohm the top two, then the bottom two. Should read low resistance, typically 8-9 ohms.

No spark yet?

The next thing to do is check the stator. Get a manual and we can go from there.

Sounds like you wasted your money on a powerpack when it was not a problem.

I would look to what makes the pack work. The points, or sensor.

I bought(stole) a motor(69 115) from a fella who had no spark and told me the pack was bad. I believed him and bought the pack and it still wouldn't run. Turned out to be the sensor.

Moral of the story:

Don't buy parts till you know what the problem is.

Also, I would get a factory service manual, before I did anything else.

Are you sure the engine's a 1979? If so, you should have 2 powerpacks, one for each bank of cylinders. Please let us know the model number for the motor (it's on a tag on the port side transom bracket). If you have an 85hp with through-hub exhaust, your ignition system should be one of the following:

1 powerpack, 1 coil (1969-72)

1 powerpack, 4 coils (1973-77?)

2 powerpacks, 4 coils (1978?-80).
