No spark? Help

I have a 1957 evinrude 7.5 just put in new points gapped at .020 new condensers and new wires. The coils look good. This motor ran before I put these on, but not very well. Have the carb off to rebuild it, went ahead and replaced these parts. Now when I put the flywheel back on and turn it with a wrench to check spark I get spark the first couple of times, but after that no spark? and the carb is not on yet. Would that make a difference? Thanks for any help.

Just rotating the flywheel with a wrench is not enough to get consistent sparking. Use the pull starter before doing anything else to check for spark. Carb has zero effect on spark.

If you still don't get spark, make sure you have the correct points hooked up to the right coil. You could also have corroded spark plug wires where they screw into the coil. Take the coil off and cut a little off to get down to some good wire and screw it back into the coil. Also check the spring clips at the other end of the wire, that goes to the spark plug, sometimes those will rust and give a poor connection. There again cut a little wire back and sand the rust of the clip and shove it back through good wire. Good luck.

I agree with wilde1, you need to turn that flywheel quite quickly for spark and I doubt you could do it very well with a wrench. You need to use the starter cord.

hey thanks for the input. Kinda thought the same thing. Can't get enough spark or momentum built up by just a wrench. Thanks again

Also make sure your new points are good and clean.

I was just reading in another forum about Somebody getting a stock of points that were dirty from the factory.
So You might try cleaning them.
Good Luck

Re: No spark? Help

Hey thanks for all the advice. You guys are great. Put the rope assembly on and got enough revolutions to have spark. Everything seems ok. Going to rebuild carb tomorrow. Thanks again
