I have a 1964? mercury outboard 50 serial 1718565. Can anyone help me to decide where to start looking for the cause for no spark in all cylinders. I really don't know much about the outboards and any help will be very much appreciated.

Does that have a distributer? If so do you have voltage to the coil, are the points OK? Do you have a book, or can you borrow a book (library) somewhere.

Sounds like a bad magneto, remove the wires from the side termail and turn it over, if there is no spark you will have to repair the mag

Its the unit that the plug wires attach to, you better find a manual before you shoot yourself in the foot --Bob  :p 1964

Re: no spark in all cylinders?

when refering to to magneto is that also called the stator? I relpaced the cap where the plug wires go in to for the rotor. The stator sits on top beneath the flywheel? i can not get any spark yet and i am still in need of help. No the stator has not been replaced yet i want to make sure i am doing the right stuff to get spark. I also noticed that the wire that is going to the cap where the coil is inside the plastic cap has not positive juice when cranking. Is this normall? Is this my problem?

Just a shot in the dark, but does that motor have a kill switch? If its set off you won't get spark.
CU

----------------------
RUNNING THE MOTOR WHILE LISTENING TO THE HORN WILL MAKE YOU MORN!!

Re: no spark in all cylinders?

The kill switch is usually by the key on the face of the control box, it's kinda hidden under a plastic piece. I'm not that familiar with these older motors but I know many here are. Good luck and let us know.
CU

-------------------
RUNNING THE MOTOR WHILE LISTENING TO THE HORN WILL MAKE YOU MORN!!

ok, i checked everything over and still no spark in all 4 cylinders. she spins over good just no spark.I am wondering if there was a way to test the magneto to actually see if it were that, that is giving me no spark. These outboards are new to me so i have really no idea.Again thanks for the advice.
Mike

Re: no spark in all cylinders?

ok my book still has not arrived yet but i would like to use the boat soon to do some fishing. Laddies had said it might be in the magneto. How do you test to see if it is the magneto. I do not understand "Sounds like a bad magneto, remove the wires from the side termail and turn it over, if there is no spark you will have to repair the mag" Where am i looking for the spark when the wires are removed? From the rotor? Please if any one can help.
Mike

Re: no spark in all cylinders?

I have it running!!! I decided to start over and rechek everything again. I took all the ignition parts off cap, rotor, points, condensor, etc. and clean everyhting with emerycloth and re-gap the points. Cleaned the plugs put everything back together. I choked the carbs and it fired right over first try!!!. I did not run it but for 30 seconds. I have to change the water pump impeller. I have no water coming out from any holes. So any suggestions on droping the lower half. It looks to only be on with 3 nuts that you take off? Thank you everone for your advice.
Mike
