Hi

I have no spark on cyl 3 and 1 I did have it running pretty decent and it just deteriorated from there ran terrible and now it won't start because of the lack of spark on the two cylinders.

I swapped the cyl 4 coil with the cyl 1 and I still don't get spark fro cyl 1

The coils are fairly new not sure exactly how old the person I bought it from said he replaced them.

Is there a way of testing the coils to see if they are getting signal to fire.

Thanks
Matthew

Go to cdielectronics.com for ignition trouble shooting.

Likely problems:

1. Cranking too slow. It has to crank at least 200 RPM to have spark
2. Problem with one sensor or the wires going to the sensor. One sensor fires cylinders 1 & 3, other sensor fires 2 & 4
3. Related to #1. If the charge coil (under the flywheel) is melted, it is shot and won't fire at slow speeds.

Ok so I did alittle more testing and have confirmed that I am getting spark on all the coils it is just so weak it will only jump a 1/16th inch gap but on one cyl it will jump a 7/16 gap or better. Dosent matter what coil i have there. have not pulled the flywheel yet to see if everything visually looks good and I can't confirm it is spinning fast enough but sure seams like it is. I swapped the sensor wires around and dose not matter where they are same resalts so I believe those are fine.

1/16" is as good as no fire. Look up under the flywheel from below. I believe you can see the charge coils on that one. Look for leaking goo.

Oog, kind of dirty. But more important, what year model is this thing? I expected to see two charge coils, but obviously there is only one in there. Is there something I don't know about?

That's a good question the cover says 135hp and I was told it is a 135hp but do not know the exact year. The modle number on the mount says 70ESL74M but it is definitely not a 70 hp.

Sense I got it. it has never ran very good. I bought it from a guy that did a bunch of work to it but never used it. Maybe I was sold a junk motor maybe not.

Is there any numbering on the block or anything that would tell me the size and year.

I would say that is a good bet.

Sorry if this is a dumbass question but dose the stator have anything to do with spark delivery. I thought is was mainly for rechargeing the battery like a alternator on a car.

I am trying to find the correct part number for a replacement I can't get a definitive answer what amp should I get.

No, no ----You are wrong.----The stator provides a pulse to the capacitor in the CD box for ignition.----Sorry , this ignition is not the same as grandpa's car.-----.Does your motor have a voltage regulator ?----Or a rectifier ?----Does it have power trim / tilt ?

Is this what you are referring to as the rectifier

it dose have power tilt trim but is is a separate unit from the motor.

That is the rectifier.------That would mean your motor takes the lower amp stator. ----I do not like that starter solenoid either.----Only factory originals for me,

So I would be looking at the 6 amp one CDI Stator OMC 6 Amp 4 Cylinder 173-1225

Them are pretty pricey. Would it be worth trying to find a used one.

How sure are you the stator is causing my issue. I suppose regardless it appers it is not right for this motor anyways and should be replaced.
