Hi i am new here and have a outboard problem. I bought a a 1989 bassboat with a mercury 2 stroke 80hp 3 cylinder and it has very low hours on it its like brand new and i think its a 1989.It worked greate before i bought it. well a week ago it fired rite up and its been a week since i purchased it and i tried to fire it up. It dident fired up but it took a long time to fire up and when it fired i put it in gear in forward and and the throttle stick foward jest to give it a little warm up it dident have power. When i increased the throttle the motor seemed to have no power like its bogging out. I checked for a spark and there was one and tried to fire it up agian. I wouldent fire up so i jest left it beacuse i thought the carbs were flooded and i went to bed. The next morning i tried to fire it up and it dident fire up. I check for a spark and there was nothing and yesturday there was a spark. I dont know what happend. Last week i did changed the lower end oil if that would help and it was raining so the boat got wet but not much beacuse it wasd covered up but the controls wernt covered good at all so it could of got wet if that would help you guys figure out whats the problem on my outboard.I tested the coils and the stator and they are good. O i forgot to tell you guys somthing when i bought the boat the boat seemed like it was sitting outside not covered beacuse the baot clear coat is gone.Thanks!2

Just a couple of did you do's, check the safety kill switch on the control or dash to see if may have been bumped to the off position and have you unpluged the black/yellow wire from the box to see if the problem is in the engine or wiring.

Re: no spark mercury 80hp

Is the engine the original stator or has it been converted to a red type stator and a 300volt regulator for the ignition system.

Re: no spark mercury 80hp

The red type stators have a voltage regulator that bleeds any voltage above 300 volts to ground so there is a possibility that the shunt regulator is bad and shorted to ground. That system really needs to be tested with a DVA not a OHM meter.
