No Spark on 1996 175 Oceanpro

I have been having problems with the engine shutting down. Anyway, I noticed the ground for the powerpack was loose and corroded. The ground wire was through the bolt that mounts the powerpack. I tried to remove the bolt and it broke. So I extended the ground and relocated it to another powewrpack mounting bolt. Thinking I had maybe found the problem, it just got worst. Now, I have no spark on any cylinder. I removed the black and yellow wire on the key switch and still no spark. I even tried to relocate the ground again and still no spark. How can I test the powerpack with a regular volt meter? I also ran across a trouble shooting guide that said to remove the balck and yellow wire from the powerpack. The only black and yellow wire is in a plug and I dont want to cut the wire. Any suggestions.....

Not sure if you've found it yet but you can download an ignition troubleshooting guide from rapair.com. This has a lot of information on troubleshooting various ignition problems.

You have the OIS 2000 system on that motor (page 33).

Seasport, thanks for the info. I made it to the powerpack test and I am not getting any reading on my meter. Should I try starting the engine and then take the meter reading? It does not specify in the reading. I was doing all of the test with the ignition in the on position. Also, are the coils grounded with the mounting bolts that hold the coil and powerpack? Thanks for the awesome guide.

Could be that you are not getting 12V to power your powerpack electronics. (Or maybe your powerpack is bad). There is a separate stator winding (power coil) on these motors which powers the powerpack electronics. You should have about 12V (peak DVA) on your power coil (between orange/black and orange wires) when the motor is cranking.

Are you absolutely sure you have a good ground on your powerpack? Double check this with an ohmmeter. (Continuity between the powerpack ground terminal and the powerhead)

How can you check the voltages with your motor running if you have no spark??

These powerpacks also have a 12V feed from the solenoid (yellow/red wire) which powers the powerpack when the motor is cranking. If the motor fires only when the key is turned (starter motor is operating), this is an indication that there is a problem with the power coil.
