How do the coils look? If they are original, they are shot.

Take the plugs out, take the top cover off and maybe the pull start if it has one. Look for a plate/port on top of the flywheel. You can open the plate/port, shine a flashlight down in there and find the coils as you turn the flywheel. If they're cracked or worse, time for a tune up kit. If you're real lucky the coils are good, but the points need to be cleaned/reset. Try that using a feeler gauge through the port/plate, or just pull the flywheel to do it. Did it have spark and then lose it, or did you just acquire the motor and then learn that it has no spark? If the coils are shot, replace coils/points/condensors as a set.

Forgot to add, if you just acquired it...do a compression test before sinking any $$ into it. Compression gauges are pretty cheap at auto parts stores. Anything below 85-90 lbs. on each jug is suspect...both readings should be within 10% of each other.

How could you have possibly seen the points operating correctly and not have seen the coils? Also, "opening and closing doesn't mean anything. Are they clean and making good electrical contact and gapped correctly? And when you put it back together, make sure the flywheel and crank tapers are clean and dry and use a torque wrench to tighten the flywheel nut to 100-105 ft lbs. Ignore this and you will wind up with a junker when it destroys the flywheel and crankshaft.

Re: no spark on both, mag ignition?

Thanks for the replys

The coils do look like the ones in the pic.

I just replaced the points and the condensors but still no spark.
Next are the coils allthough they look to be in pretty good shape.
If all 3 parts are replaced with new plugs & leads and it still fails to spark
where should I look next?
Their is a high speed cut off switch on the side that I took apart cleaned and re-assembled. I have tryed by-passing this and even disconecting the wires all together when testing for a spark.

Is their a simple way of testing the coil and leads off the motor?

I just picked this up for $50 and it came with a gas can and hose ect. so
I figure if I can get it running thats a bonus!!

Re: no spark on both, mag ignition?

Sounds like your coils are toast. Replace those and follow the advice already given, especially that about securing the flywheel when you put it back together. Also, don't run that puppy out of the water. The lower unit needs to be at least 50% submerged in water, like in a drum/barrel, or use a set of muffs with the garden hose if you don't have a water container. The thread "awakening a sleeping outboard" on this forum will walk you through the basics. I'd do a compression test before going any further though...if it is has low/no compression, any more money spent is $$ down a badger hole.
