No spark on one side

Hi,
I have a 1973 evinrude 115 hp model 115393M.
I just recently purchased this motor and have discovered it doesn't have spark on the left 2 cylinders ( standing behind the motor)
is it common that both coils go bad at the same time or am I barking up the wrong tree?

Visit ---cdielectronics----And follow trouble shooting for your motor.----But before you spend $$ do a compression test.-----The 73 model V-4 are oddball as far as internal engine parts are concerned.

Probably wrong tree. I would suspect one of the sensors, or the wires going to them. There are two sensors on the timer base, one fires two cylinders, other one fires the other two cylinders.

Of course, is possible that you have two bad coils. Or a bad power pack.

Testing is required. A simple Ohms test usually will detect a sensor's defective wires.

Could also check your kill wire from the key switch is not earthing out some where along the length

Is this with engine running or just cranking with key??

With engine cranking with key, other 2 cylinders are sparking
it will start and run but wife is up at controls( you know how that is ) and I am at the engine.
compression is even at 125 lbs

I suspect fazt was thinking bad stator (common on '73 models). But I don't think that is it. See post #3 and rule out the sensor & its wires. If that's good, you may have a bad power pack. That's when you spend money on test equipment or throw parts at it and hope you hit it right.
