no spark , Please help

I have a 1977 omc i/o ford 230 990230g engine . I have no spark . I have changed out coil , condenser, cap, rotor , plugs and wires nothing . The points look good with little wear . My coil does have good current . I am stuck . Thank you for any input . Scott

Check for 12V at the + side of the coil with key ON
Rotate the distributor until the points are closed, then use a wood or plastic piece and open the points and see if there is a spark

Get a points file, they can "LOOK" good but need
filing.

Hi Jerry and friends . Checked the points Jerry , No spark . I put new points in and again nothing . Also had another new condenser and installed . No luck, No spark . Do you think the distributor could be bad and is there any way to check it . Thanks for the knowledge . Scott

The distributor just opens and closes the points. If points are opening and closing then the distributor is working.

The coil get powered on the + side, the points close the - side. If there is power to the coil and points are opening and closing then there should be spark

Just for clarity, amps are the amount of power being drawn. Volts is the potential. When things are measured, your seeing volts

Are the points closing?
If they are closing and still no spark, check to see is the wire from the distributor to the (-) side of the coil has a good connection and there is continuity. Meaning, with the points open, place probes on each end of the wire and set the meter on R1 ohms scale. There should be 0.0 ohms measured

I also set .019 on points at #1 top dead center . I did make sure I moved the dist. to top point when I set them

The real issue is do they "close" on the flat side
If the points do not close, or if the points are glazed (meaning old, used points that need filing) then they do not make contact. If they do not make contact and close, then there will be no spark

they do open and close . I went and bought a starting switch so I could wath them

I will do that sat. with the coil . I have read 11.8 at the coil and got voltage on the - but did not read the reading . Thanks again

In simple terms
You can take a coil by it self and connect Pos side of the Bat to to (+) side of the coil

Connect a plug wire to the coil top and a spark plug to the other end and the base of the plug to the Neg side of the Bat

Take another wire from the Neg side of the Bat and quickly touch the (-) side of the coil and each time there should be a spark on the plug. If you do not get a spark then the coil is bad

Just guessing????
Do these old motors have the ignition module like the Cobras have?
If so then maybe the module is bad ? Or the interrupter switch is stuck?

Ayuh,...... This points to two possibilities,......
The wire from the (-) side of the coil, to the hot side of the points, might not be passin' the power through,......
Or,.....
The distributor body needs to be a good solid ground, as the static side of the points needs to be able to ground out the coil, through the points,.....
