No Spark?

Hi all, I'm a newb to this forum and boating in general. I browsed the site and couldn't find anything pertaining to my problem so I figured I'd give this a try.
First off, I just bought a 1969 Glastron 14' with a 1973 50hp Johnson outboard for $400. The guy hadn't used it in 3 years and wasn't sure if it would start and when I tried to start it today, sure enough it didn't. My brother and I hooked up a new battery and tried to crank it over with the electric start. The starter engaged the flywheel without a problem but it just wouldn't turn over. We took the spark plug off to see if there was a spark but there wasn't. I doubled checked to make sure it was in neutral but I don't know what else to do.
Any help would be great, we are doing a striped bass tournament in 3 weeks!
Thanks,
Copper

Re: No Spark?

Put a little 50:1 pre-mix fuel in a spray bottle and try squirting it in the carburetor throat while cranking. Just want to see if you can get fire.

Also, you need to keep the choke on while cranking when cold.

Re: No Spark?

pull the plugs, tilt the motor in the upright position. pour marvel mistery oil in each cylinder and let it sit for 24 hours. then try to turn it over. if it won't. then try to turn it over with a wrench on the flywheel nut. DO NOT TURN IT BACKWARDS. if this doesn't work soak it another day. do a search, RED word at the top of this page, "awakening a sleeping outboard" posted by joe reeves
