No spark???

'77 Chrysler 45HP has me stumped. Top cyclinder has no spark. I traced the problem to a ground that runs from the top coil to the voltage regulator. When the ground wire is off, the coil fires like it should but when I hook up the ground to the VR it dies. With the ground connected, the coil has 12 volts going through it at all times no matter if the points are open or closed. How about an answer!

Voltage regulator, or rectifier? pull the rectifier, check it. If one leg is shorted (shows continuity in both polarities, it's bad.<br />My gut tells me it's bad anyway, as how else could the coil 'see' ground.
