I'm surveying a 1997 johnson 50hp the I2, i guess they made I3s that year too. Anyhow, compression, lower unit checked out. But no spark on the top cylinder. plug wire's fine. So is all it's in need of is a new coil pack? Assuming it's not just some corroded connections. Is there anything else that goes along with that replacement traditionally? Any other thing it could be? And also if it is the coil pack, can i pull one off my 1986 60 hp evinrude and slap it on there? Thanks for loggin in.

Re: No spark

To find out for sure if it is the coil, simply swap it with a known good working one to see if the problem follows the coil.

Re: No spark

Alright, apparently the the johnson only has one coil pack for both cylinders. Is it still likely that the coil pack is my problem when one cylinder is working, the other isn't? Also, could i use a coil pack off my old evinrude 60hp? even though it would be a single cyl CP?

Re: No spark

I would replace the coil if you don't have a manual so you know how to check it. The coil is about 45 dollars and next in line is the power pack that is about 140 dollars. The manual is about 25 bucks. You could just reverse the two small wires going to the coil and with the spark plugs wires removed from the plugs and holding them close to a ground 7/16 of an inch away, crank the engine and check for spark. If the spark is still absent in the same spark plug wire you could replace the pack (but it could be upstream from the pack). If it moves to the other plug wire replace the coil.

Re: No spark

Lakester I just didn't like the idea of the plug firing with the piston down with all the ports open. Not sure if it would do anything.
