I am looking at a boat with a 1984 Johnson 115 on the back. The motor is not getting any spark and the owner said he believes that it is the packs? How much money would this cost to replace and how difficult would it be?

Re: No Spark?

To try and start this motor, i would first try to hold in on the emergency kill button, and check for spark. Also I would unplug red connector under power head cover, and use jumper wire to connect batt. cable to solenoid thus cranking engine to check for spark. Ignition switch could be H/S.

OEM prices:
Power packs, (2) @ $110 each
Coils (4) at $35 each
Timer Base (1) at $281

I'd pass, unless you can figure out exactly what is wrong with it.

There may be some corrosion (light rust) under the flywheel, try removing the flywheel, clean with emery cloth, reinstall and go from there. If that does not do it, perform a stator test (get a good manual, Seloc or Clymer).

Re: No Spark?

Get the OEM manual you will not be sorry about that one. I doubt that both pwer packs went out at the same time. Check the kill switch and controls first. If this motor is unknown to you do a compression test first. I wouldn't chase down the spark issue until I knew that the motor was mechanically sound.
