Re: bad starter?

Quite a few starter problems can be traced back to electrical connection problems. Make sure all connections are clean and tight, make sure the battery is in good condition.

You may want to check the Top Secret Files at the top of the page for more assistance.

Re: bad starter?

When you took the starter apart did you look at the brushes carefully...the positives ones especially...was the copper wire covered in a casing and no open spots on it...the negative ones will be bare..but the positive ones must have a sheath on the copper braided wire..one bare spot hitting the starter casing is bad news....if brushes are bad get a new set...wash the whole starter down with CRC electrical cleaner..blow it out ....install new brushes....a little dab of grease in the lower bronze bearing oil in the top one..take 2000 grit paper and lightly polish the commutator..and spray it clean after doing it...

if done right it will be like a new starter....cheaper to rebuild than buy new..and careful when you buy used..you may end up in the same boat in time....

LOOK at them brush wires...99% of the time it is them either broken or insulation has broken down....

You have a short in the starter. Should not be continuity between starter housing and pos. terminal.

Re: bad starter?

thanks al verry good infomy starter looks like it could use that treatment although now i figureg out the starter is fine i tested directly to starter and it engages, when i re installed and wired up the solenoid just clicks once when i tyr to start with key and starter doesnt engage than when i unhook the ground from battery  motor is a 63 johnson 28hp its gotta be either my keyswitch or a mix up in the wiring theres a green wire from pos solenoid terminal (same side as the power from batt) that green goes to "B" on keyswitch then i have a white wire going from "st" on keyswitch to one of the center terminals on solenoid and continues to the vac switch on motor

Re: bad starter? ... starters fine, now ign trouble

motor is a '63 28hp johnson rx-11. the manual say to test with an ignition analizer, lol i have a multimeter anyone know what the resistance should be on the coils? both read 1.3 ohms

Re: bad starter? ... starters fine, now ign trouble

ok should there be any resistance beween the lead and the casing on the condensers? im thinkin yes. checked all 4 condensers between 2 motors i have and none showed resistance checked the condensors on my motorcycle and got readings from them so this tells me all 4 are bad, coincidental considering i keep hearing condensers rarley go bad. i think the guy who had the motor before eplaced points and coils but never bothered to get new condensers, i think they are original (part number ds-581419) i also did a little test using a 9v battery against the lead and casing for a few seconds then touch the lead to the casing to check for spark but nothing maby i need 12volts to the condenser but i think they are shot
