My 1999 Volvo Penta 5.7 will not start. I have power at the igntition switch and power at the coil, but, there is no spark.

The coil and distributor cap have both been replaced.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

Re: No Spark

Try to replace the rotor inside the distributor. Also do you have an ignition amplifier? If so check that. Also check that all connections to coil are good.

Rage, thanks for your reply.

No ignition amplifier that I am aware of. Coil wires have been checked and rechecked. Test light indicated power on pos and neg terminals of coil. Rotor was replaced.

Engine cranks, but still no spark. :(

Any other suggestions ??

Re: No Spark

Bul
I do not know your engine at all but most about the same.
Do you have points or some type of electronic points?? Dont just replace things until you locate the problem.

Start by putting a dwell meter on the Minus side of the coil and crank engine. Should get about 30 degrees. If not then need to check points and condenser. If you have standard type points and do not have a dwell meter then can use a volt meter on minus side of coil and turn engine by hand to make sure minus side go from ground to 10 volts.

If dwell at 30 degrees and no spark them pull coil high tension lead and Ohm out to make sure it is good. I use a solid wire here instead of the carbon wire because seen this wire fail lots of times in auto and if it fails loose spark to all 8 cylinders or dead in water. If it is good then hold about 7/16 of an inch from block and crank engine. No spark then put your old coil back and try again. If have good spark then check the distributer cap and rotor.

Make sure the distributer cap and rotor both fit right and cap center and rotor ok. If so should have spark to each wire. I check with a old plug gapped to 7/16 and grounded. move each wire to it to check.
