Hello all I'm Allen. New too the site but heard this was the best place to ask a boat question so here I go. Have a 50 Johnson on my pontoon boat. Yesterday put the muffs on to wam the boat up before heading to the lake and motor crank up and ran fine for 5 minutes then shut off by itself. Did finally get crank back up and idled for a few more minutes then it shut it's off again. Now turns over just fine but no spark. Changed spark plugs but that didn't work. Fuel is all good. And for some reason the big mystery is I can't find a kill switch anywhere. Any info on whether too start its this is appreciated! Thanks!

:welcome: Allensr6 to iboats. Nice to have you aboard...

Any time you loose spark, it never is the spark plugs all going bad at once. The real odds of that happening is unbelievably low...to almost non-existent. So you have to look at what type ignition system you have. And being that you haven't specified the year of your 50HP engine, it is hard to tell what type you do have. So look to see what feed the spark coils and see if that is working. Until we know the year, that is all I can offer for advice... JMHO!

A 2000 engine should have a kill switch and if the lanyard was pulled, spark would be lost. The kill switch is usually on the shift/throttle control box, or if the ignition switch is on the console, then it may be built into the switch or a separate unit along side it. But if the engine ran before, that's not likely the problem. Do you not remember seeing a kill switch lanyard when you last ran the boat?

No. I specifically looked for that. I own a trophy bay liner that does have a kill switch with a lanyard and I don't see one anywhere. I don't see a hole that may have been plugged for one or anything. I don't see any kind of switch on the throttle handle where one would be either. Is there one maybe built into the throttle handle?

With that being said I assumed all boats was mandatory equipped with a kill switch maybe I'm wrong. But visibly there isn't one in sight. So with that in the beginning it idles for a while then just quit. I restarted it again and again it idles for a bit and quit. Now it just turns over with no spark on either cylinder. Hope this helps. Thanks again! And yes the ignition switch is on he console.

I pulled the spark plugs out and left the plugs in the wire and turned the motor over and no spark. So then pulled the plugs from the wired stuck a screwdriver in the wires and turned the motor over to try and get a spark from the block and nothing. Nothing on either plug. I will put the model number in here tommorrow. Thanks again!

Drill down to your exact model.

Fuel tank vent open?

Model number is on a small plate on the transom clamp, port (left) side I think..

You need to get a good spark tester that will let you check each wire for a hot, sharp, blue 7/16 inch long spark. The old screwdriver method is not good for boats.

There almost has to be a safety kill switch somewhere on a 2000 model boat, I have mid eighties OMC motors with them, they didn't stop putting them in once they started. Post a picture of the dash and the controller and we'll find the switch, It could be someone took it out or bypassed it though. I don't think that is your issue since the motor ran for a while.

Your problem sounds more like a fuel starvation issue, than a lack of spark. If it turns out you really don't have any spark we can try to help you too

Is the VRO oil injection still hooked up on the motor?

The question about the fuel tank vent is a very good one, been there, done that.

Model number j50plssm. Ok bought a nice tester. No spark from plug wires while motor turning over. Also tested directly off coil and no spark of either one.

The brp website shows the lanyard clips in at the stop button.

I can only guess your j50plssm has been converted from a tiller to remote steer?

IMHO if the motor idles even for one or two combustion cycles your problem is not the kill switch unless you have a short in that circuit.
