I'm new to boating last year purchased boat with 70hp
johnson(1982), ran great the six times had out last year.Had engine winterized at a boating shop end of
last season. The first time I tried to start the engine this season it only cranks over but does not start. The bottom spark plug is getting wet so it is
getting fuel. Looks like is not getting any spark.
Are ther any easy checks I can do.

Also is Champion QL77JC4 the correct spark plug for this engine, and at what gap. The owner manual lists
QL77J4 plug at .040 gap, I can not find this plug.

Brad... The Champion QL77JC4 is the proper s/plug with the gap set to .040 is correct.

Rig up a spark tester of some kind whereas you can set a gap of 7/16". Remove the s/plugs and crank the engine to see if the spark jumps that gap with a very strong blue lightning like flame.

If no spark or a weak spark, disconnect the large RED electrical connector at the engine. Crank the engine by energizing the solenoid with a jumper (Bat term to small 3/18" nut term). If you now have spark, replace the ignition switch.

What are the compression readings?

Let us know what you find.

Motor has no spark at all even when energizing the solenoid with a jumper.

compression readings 130, 130, 125. are these ok?

Thanks

I assume that you did disconnect the large RED electrical plug at the engine before jumping the solenoid?

If so, and still no spark, I could only suggest that you check all electrical connections associated with the powerpack (could be dirty or broken), and as a last resort, replace that pack.

Richard and Joe

Yes the safety clip is in place. Going to check all other connections tonight. If still no spark it's off
to a repair shop as this is the extent of my abillity

Thanks for your help and I'll let you know what fixed
the problem

Brad

Re: no start 1982 70hp johnson

Hi

After going through all connections, and removing power pack(at least I think it's the power pack, brown unit about 4" by 1 1/2" just behind coils)
I now have spark on bottom 2 cylinders (engine now
starts). Rechecked connections and looks like the
terminal, from orange wire coming from top coil,
is either worn down or damaged slightly as it does not look nice and rounded like other 3 terminals in the connector. Can this wire and terminal be pulled out of the connector so the terminal can be replaced. I tried to pull it out but did not want to damage anything and have to do more repairs.

Thanks

Another question, do you have to have the water ears
and fuel line hooked up to the engine when doing a
test for spark?

No, you're simply doing a test procedure, not attempting to start or run the engine.

Does the terminal at the connector from the coil
have to be pulled out or pushed back through the connector.

Re: no start 1982 70hp johnson

I Switched the terminals coming from coils to the
connector that goes to the power pack, the no spark now moved from the top to the middle. This tells me that there is no power getting to this line.

Can anyboby tell me if this means that it needs a new
power pack or can something else cause this problem.

Thanks for any help
Brad
