no start mercruiser

have a 3.7 mercruiser w/ no spark. there is no spark at the coil. i took the coil off and sound like there is water in it if i shake it. is that normal. i made sure the points are cleaned. could it be a bad coil. there is power at the coil w/ key on. any other suggestions it could be.thanks

Coils are filled with oil for cooling... That's probably what you're hearing...

Put the system back together, with the wire for the tacho disconnected... turn the engine by hand until the points are open... Check for voltage at either side of the coil... you should have 12volts on both sides.. If you have nothing on either side, then I would be looking at the resistance wire... if you have 12v on the + side and nothing on the - then the coil is faulty...

is a ford coil different then the mercruiser coil.

Ford has all kinds of different coils, unless you know what you are getting, I would suggest you get the right part for the job at hand.
