I have a merc 500 1975, I can't get it to start at all. Good spark but I do notice when I prime it,I see gas leaking from one of the carbs. Would this cause the problem???? Also Should the spark plugs be wet if I was trying to get it to go???? I do have gas at the fuel pump.. Please help thanks Erik

Re: no start no gas

If it is getting fuel the plugs should be damp. Wet if flooded. Also it can be normal for some of the old mercs to drip a little fuel at a carb when starting.
Sometimes you just about have to flood a inline to get them to start. It is really hard to flood one unless the float is stuck.
I have a 1975 150 H.P. To get it to start I have to pump the bulb hard 2 or 3 times after firm. You can hear the fuel squirting at the carbs.
Some people use a spray bottle with pre mix and spray fuel in the carbs. Be careful and don't start a fire. Never use starting fluid in a outboard.
