I have a 1992 Merc. LX. I was getting no tempt reading. I checked the guage and it is working, at least when I (briefly) cross to ground. The guage will go up and down once released.

So, I thought, it must be the sending unit. Replaced it with brand new one. But still nothing. Thermostat?

Run a continuity check from the wire that connects to the sensor to the sense wire that connects to the gauge...

Check to make sure the base of the sensor is grounding by testing for continuity from the base of the sensor to a good ground. You also need to make sure you have the special t-stat gasket installed that has the four brass "rivets" in it. Those are there to provide continuity to ground from the sensor. Hope that helps.

So, if I have tested the gauge and it works, replaced the sensor with a brand new one, what's left? Merc's service manual says this motor should 140, does it matter whether it gets there or not?????

Read CheeseCutters post again...check the ground from the sensor base to the block.
