No thermostat in motor?

My boat is having over heating problems, I took the thermostat cover off and there was no thermostat in there. So the motor has no thermostat at all.

Where can I find a new one? Anyone have a part number or a website?

What would this do to my motor since there was not on in there.

Re: No thermostat in motor?

Is this the alumunum block inline 4 with fresh water cooling or the cast iron inline 6 cylinder

Newbie, loosen up a bit..... He has a very valid point.

Read the stickies at the top and post all the details about your boat. Does it have the 3" or 4" exchanger? Is the engine the same year as your signature? What temps are you seeing? What temps do you normally see?

When you read the sticky, you will find the service manual for your boat and all the info you will ever need is in there, even for the thermostat.

I seriously doubt you are going to be overwhelmed with help from the most knowledgeable people on here with your attitude.

Good luck, buddy.

Depending on design they can overheat or over cool. Neither is desirable and it is indicative of a previous owner who was having an overheat issue and tried to get away with a simple (but incorrect) fix . . .

Re: No thermostat in motor?

I have the same engine but couple of years newer. If what you removed to access the thermostat looked like a thermostat housing, it was not the correct location for it. The best thing you can do is purchase the shop manual for your engine/drive. It's gonna help you out 10 fold on the engine and outdrive, wiring, etc. There are many things on this engine that you absolutely need that manual for. Downloads are nice but you can't beat the real thing. I've done the water pump repair on my engine this year and can say it was a challenge, and I've been working on engines since I rode big wheels! That little weeping is not the overheat issue, used mine like that couple of trips out and never budged over 160'F but I kept an eye on my coolant level. No one wants to see anyone have a hard time with their boat, but these guys here know there stuff and I gotta say I appreciate their help and knowledge. I say ya gotta get the manual and go from there.

Yes, I am going to try and find one asap. I think I took off the right thing? It had a spot where it would sit, looked like on that came off a car/truck.

Its not a little weeping, when the boat is running its a steady stream of water. Like some one is running water from a kitchen sink.

Re: No thermostat in motor?

That is not the spot where the tstat is. It is on the top of the engine where the hoses meet together from each side of the engine. A sticking thermostat or one installed backwards can def. give problems. Here is a manual for sale on Ebay:

If the thermostat is just missing... it won't cause this engine to overheat, it won't get up to temp. Especially if you have the 4" heat exchanger. They are known to have some issuses with the 3" exchanger.

That clymer manual is garbage and why spend the money when the official shop manual is free to download. I appreciate your trying to help however sit back and learn a bit.

Re: No thermostat in motor?

Bt Doc.... I am not sure we have established which heat exchanger he has and if it has been cleaned.

The link to the 470 manual is in the ADULTS Only section and it gives a clear view of the t-stat housing ;)

I think he has been reading about the cam shaft seals leaking ;)

I would probable start with the manual and do a pressure test first after making sure there is adequate anti freeze and everything is topped off.

He`s got the manual now and is reading it, he thought where the leaks was coming from in the weep hole was where the T stat was.

I think it is the cam seals leaking, since I found this site online that explains it, and when they go bad you will have water coming out of that hole on the water pump cover.

I think I need the seal that seals A/F

I looked in the exhaust manifold section and figured it out now, I did take off the right thing and there was no T stat when I took off figure 11. I looked inside and I looked in 11 nothing.

I think I am going to find a new T stat, get the seals and put them in and then see what happens.

I am going to keep on reading that manual so I stop looking so much like an idiot, and try to rinse everything out and make sure nothing is clogged.
