How bad is it to run no thermostat in a Johnson 60 HORSE. I know a lot of people choose not to run a thermostat, so the motor never really gets hot, but it is always hot down in south florida. So maybe this is why? Anyway, looking for some opinions. If I would run a thermostat, what would probably be a good thermostat to run?

Re: No Thermostat

you are right the motor never really gets hot, it can cold seize if you run it without one .... only racers run their outboards without thermostats because they run the motor WOT all the way ..... what do you mean what would be a good thermostat to run? .... whicever one fits on your motor would be a good one to use ..........

He probably means what temp would be a good temp to run like in cars where there's usually 3 different temp thermostats one can put in. I believe in outboards there's only the one to put in though as they probably assume it's warm out when running the engine...

Re: No Thermostat

the engines are designed to run between 143 and 160 degrees, there is only 1 stat for them, it starts to open at 143, at 160 it's fully open. running without effects combustion, which effects performance, also causes, excessive carbon build up. most of the 1950's motors do not have stats, and they are notorious for smoking, and carbon build up.

thanks for the info. Yes I was referring to the temperature of the stat. I wasn't aware that there is only one for the motor. Im still trying to figure out the year of this motor, so I can get to work on these small things and get it out on the water!

Re: No Thermostat

what we do is to take the "guts" out of the thermostat and put the remaining shell back in to restrict the flow a little bit so it doesn't run too cold...across the state from ya'
