Re: No Title for my motor - Help Please!!

It took me about 3 months to title my boat and trailer I got from a guy in AZ that inherited it from his grandfather (years dead). I was a nightmare. I almost gave up. I am in NM. Also a state that titles boats, trailers and motors. Which really doesn't make much since, my 67 Holiday probably had the motor and out drive changed half dozen time over the last 50 years. I found (at least here) you can get what is called an "insurance bond" then you can get a "kinda title". The bond protects the state in case the boat ever shows up stolen.. it pays off the REAL owner if they ever come forward. My insurance, Farmers, gladly sold me one for about $40.00. Being I was sure of the pedigree, I was not concerned about the guy ever coming up from the grave and trying to re-clam the boat. Might be worth a phone call?

I live in SC and its a pain here as well lol.

my current boat I bought in GA and just got a bill of sale for the boat and motor. They did require a title for the trailer though (weird) and a tag on it.

got to SC with it all and the dmv told me if I didnt plan to resell the trailer back to someone in GA to just toss the title to it as they dont care about trailers. Went to the DNR with the bill of sale for the boat/motor and they cut me a title to the motor and the boat and gave me my stickers for the boat and the sticker for the engine.

I've got a 84 70hp evinrude I want to fix and use but it was going to be a process for a title without paperwork. luckily my grandfather found the paperwork so now its just a matter of signing it over.

though, here....if you dont have paperwork, you have to apply for a title search which costs $$. then they will give you info for the previous owners if it comes back as not reported stolen. then you have to contact all the previous owners and get a notorized signed statement from them releasing the engine before you can get a title.

if they are dead, dont care, etc. it was an even bigger hurdle which thank god I havent had to get involved with as of yet lol.

A poster looks for info on his situation in MO, and people respond with their stories about issues from every other state but MO.

Next of kin can file for a replacement title for a deceased family member so long as their are no claims/liens against it, so have the person that you bought it from get a replacement title in their name and then sign it over to you.

Titling, registration, etc. of outboards is a major can of worms. There is no recourse to outboard theft (must never happen in NJ, where the outboard is "part of the boat") unless the outboard is at least registered, better titled. Even then, what the thiefs do with outboards they steal in title states is simply take them to technologically advanced states (like NJ?) where they are simply an unidentifiable accessory.

My advice? If an outboard has no ID plate and is not registered and/or titled to the seller it is stolen and worth scrap. I would not touch it.
