As some of you might remember I am the one that had the electrical short on one of my 1994 Evinrude 200s. Once I got that fixed then I had a power problem where I couldn't get any top end. And then after swaping powerpacks the other motor started acting the same way. I got the motors running smooth but still can't get max rpms out of them. In neutral they will rev till the tach needle is burried. When I put one motor in gear at a time I can only get 3000 rpms at WOT, when I put them both in gear at WOT the boat will plain out and the motors will get up to 3800 rpms. I have since put a new powerpack on the engine that went crazy second with no change in performance. The boat is a 1994 Scarab Sport 302 and before all this happened the motors would reach 5500 rpms almost instantly, I did not change props, and there is no added weight, in fact there is less weight because I burned through a lot of fuel while working on it. Had a mechanic check the carbs, timing, linkage, carb plates and spark, all checked out perfect, although you can't check the spark at WOT, the mechanic is stumped also. Could there be a weak coil on each engine? Or a couple of bad plug wires? Why would it run so smooth and still have no top end? Any input would help alot.

Thanks,
Chris

If your mechanic has a peak reading meter, have him make longer leads for meter, connect to pack output wire on ignition coil, boat in water, in gear, full throttle, check each cylinder each engine, you should find cylinders that are not firing. Rapair makes a test wiring harness that connects to all 6 cylinders and you just switch back/forth to check the cylinders. You can full throttles the engines, boat on plane trimmed, touch up trim for a second, if rpms drop 3/400 rpms check stator. I would almost drive over and fix it for a ride in a Scarab.

Looked at old post, are you sure all of the wires are in the right place, with all of the parts switching. Checks magnets in flywheel. I think if you unplug the tan wire to pack, it will bypass S.L.O.W.

I wish I had the plugs in the wrong place. The magnets are good as well. I heard that about the tan wire but I do not have a SLOW problem because the engines would never reach 3800 rpms and I dont think they will rev high in neutral. I think the coil test you mentioned is the next step. What about loose or bad battery connections? I heard just tonight that could cause this problem. I did disconnect the batteries when I did the initial work on the engines, maybe I didnt tighten the cables as tight as they should be. They are held on with wing nuts. I heard thats bad. I will check that first thing in the morning.

Is there anyone out there that knows what the hell is going on with these motors?

Chris
