Here is what I have-
1979-75hp CHRYSLER,3cyl on a 16ft runabout..
The highest rpms i can get is around 2700 rpms at WOT and 25mph...I can pull a person on a tube but just barley fast enough to get teh tube on plane..
The prop is 13X15 and has a cpl of nicks on each blade.I have ordered a new prop. When pulling a person on the tube top speed was only about 15mph.
SUCKS gas quick.Smokes heavily at idle,Sounds good...Compression is the same on all 3 cyls. Its was around 150psi If i remember right..
I watched the motor at idle and saw that water was coming out of a hold next to the #2 cyl.The bolt that was there is missing. This hole is in the same location as the temp sender on number 1,if that makes sense.I pulled the #2 plug and it was clean as new.
Again, all 3 cyl have good compresion, highest rpms i can get is 2700,top speed with just me in the boat is about 27-29,prop is 13X15,drinks the gas down like no tomorrow..
I have checked the butterflies to make sure they are all opening up at wot...
IM thinking, the timing and/or mixture needs adjusting,Maybe a blown head gasket
Any thoughts??

Re: no top end and found water...

By the year of the motor I am guessing it is a chrysler. Number 2 plug is not firing or is getting water. I would do a spark test on the wire and see.

Re: no top end and found water...

I did a Compression Check just now to confirm my memory...All 3 Cylinders are showing 150psi.
Im starting to think that the head gasket might be blown and letting water in the cyl which is why it is not firing.Getting good spark on all 3 cyl.Top and bottom plugs were normal looking,#2 plug looks brand spanking new.
Right now it is in the shop getting the carbs adjusted, new plugs, timing set.

I would guess that you are getting water into #2 cylinder. That would explain the clean spark plug. It's getting a steam cleaning.

Re: no top end and found water...

If the shop you took the motor to for the tune up uses water muffs instead of a test tank they will report it is working good until you take it to the lake. When you get it in the water the back pressure will make the cylinder stop working. Number 2 spark plug should look dingy. To verify that you are getting water in number 2 cylinder take a dirty plug from Number 1 or 3 and stick it in 2. Run motor for a day and then look at plug 2. If it is clean you are getting water in that cylinder and your plug is getting steam cleaned. Please post your model, HP and make of your motor.
