Re: no wake zone question

As already mentioned, if it was that easy you'd never be able to get on plane anywhere but open ocean.

And as for the whining in this thread, give me a break. This is a discussion forum and I've never been pressured to spend a dime here or anywhere else for that matter and never will. Chip, if its so bad here why do you bother?

You only have a few posts so do yourself a favor and cut the strings now before you have a lot vested in this place. With your attitude it's only going to cause you stress. If I were you I'd leave here now.

People that think this place is bad should go over to Pirate 4x4 and ask how to change spark plugs. This place is a carnival compared to that one.
Have you honestly read what I posted? It has nothing to do with whining. Take a deep breath and re-read it. If someone is not going to give an honest answer than why speak at all? I simply pointed out that this forum is attached to a web-store, since a majority of the people that come here for the first time may also need to outfit a boat and would like to buy. If they get treated like crap they wont come back. I feel certain individuals have a "god" complex and are not afraid to show it and I am sure it is hurting the business that this forum is attached too. Whining, not sure where that came from. I think the heavy handed tactics of some are Un-called for. All just my opinion, you don't have to like it that's the beauty of the forum, the little X at the upper right will take care of that.

Might I suggest if you (anyone) have a problem with someone else on this forum, you simply take it off-line and discuss via PM's... Unless you create a thread dedicated to this issue, you are hijacking a prefectly legit question from the OP.

Just my 2 cents...

You are correct but if you post anything on the main page that the "gods" do not like it gets squashed.

FWIW, the single comment that might have offended a few turned into a huge tangent to the thread, killing the topic it would seem.

How'd you determine those are illegal buoys?

Yeah that's kind of the big question. Lots of marinas have markers saying no wake that have no legal reason for being there.

I used to go a lot slower in no wake zones but after watching the city water taxi and the marine discovery center pontoons fly along I got over it and travel at the same speed as them.

OK, but I am still unclear how the thread starter's buoys could be determined as illegal . . . I am just looking at a drawing, and I think that is all we have to go by except the river name . . .

I don't think the OP stated the buoy's in the drawing were illegal.
Somebody just chimed in how private docks are putting them in for their benefit.

On another note.....QC, would you ever try to fly by Willow Beach to get to the dam?

The simple answer to the original question has already been posted. Those are illegal buoys and you don't have to do anything at all if you don't want to. In that situation I would stay on the far side of them and keep on plane at full speed. Out of respect for what the marina is trying to do, I wouldn't go on plane to the right of them unless something prevented me from going around the other side, but I typically don't pay a whole lot of attention to private no-wake markers.
Yeah Pierutrus, I was referring to this post when I first asked . . .

On the Willow question, I haven't screwed that up, but two friends did. When going upriver those things jump out at you with little warning, but they are in fact legal and attract a lot of tickets . . .

Well, I don't know how you guys do it in Canada or CA, but here in Florida there are official signs they put up to signify a no wake zone. Buoys like that or private signs are put up to be ignored...

I made the ***umption that there was a good chance they were "illegal". Actually unauthorized would have been a better word. I didn't realize my words would be taken as gospel to the letter.

I should have said that here in Florida you could ignore them if you wanted to because they were probably not official markers. I have seen buoys and floats marking off no wake zones, but they are always proceeded by one of the official signs.

Here in MN, you can put up some markers if you own lakeshore property, including swimming zone markers. In most cases, however, you need permission from the DNR.

So, here, it's a mistake to ignore marker bouys, since they may be legitimate. Sadly, hazard marker bouys are not one of the allowed private placements. Many boaters have found rocks that should have been marked, but aren't.

My father has a running feud with the park service on the small lake he lives in. There is a submerged structure (old dam) that has large metal beams that come within a few feet of the surface when the water is low (the water around it is 20-30'). When the water is low enough, he will go tie a something to it (he likes to use old fire extinquishers or small propane cylinders) with 2' of cord. Usually they are under water but when the pool gets low enough they are a pretty good warning. The park service has removed them at least 5 times.

You CANNOT tell him to stop it, He's old and won't listen.

Although his action of good faith is commendable I wonder what would happens is someone hits any of those 2 home made markers while they are hidden just a couple of inches under the water surface.... I think the effort will be better if he gets some kind of "whistle blower" local news to address the issue. If he could find someone that has sustained damage due to that dam even the better... Good luck!
