I just bought a 1994 ranger 374v bass boat with a 1994 Mercury XRI 175hp 2.5L. I have rode in boats with these motors before and there was always a beep when you turn the key on to let you know the warning system is active. Mine doesn't do this. I have drove the boat about 4 hours since I got it and it is pumping plenty of water and oil. There is always some smoke while its running. As added measure I put about 4 ounces of quicksilver oil to the 5 gal I put in each tank of gas just for peace of mind knowing there is some oil going to the motor incase something happened.

Where do I start looking? All of the wires seem to be hooked up at the motor. There is a little black box under the ecm with a red light on it. I figured this might be the buzzer. The light doesn't come on when I turn the switch to the on position. Also, under my dash there is a tan wire with a blue stripe with a terminal end on it that isn't hooked to anything. This appears to be close to the same tan/blue stripe wire thats hooked to each head.
Where should I start. I don't like running this thing without some kind of warning system and obviously someone either disabled it or something stopped working.

Re: no warning buzzer

There should be an overtemp switch on one head, with a lead going to a terminal strip, high on the starboard side. Ground that point and the buzzer should sound. There should be 12V there from the buzzer with the key on.

Odds are good you'll find things disconnected, and a bad oil alert on it. (free from PO)
