I traced down my starting problem to a bad coil. Got a new one today and after a few cranks and pouring gas down the carb she finally started. I had ear muffs but no water was coming back out so I shut her down. What can I look at to see why no water is pumping into the engine?

Its an 85 Mercruiser 3.0 140HP

Re: no water flow

Just had this problem.

First things to check are your impeller, its condition and make sure your key is in place.

make sure the copper tube running from the upper to the lower unit is there (it goes inside your water guide tube)

Before you pulled your lower unit, take the main feed line from the transom to the stat housing off and see if water's shooting out of there, make sure there's no clog. I took that hose completely off and shot water down that tube in the back. to make sure there was no clog.

You should narrow down your problem from there.

The impeller is gear driven from the engine correct? It wont suck in water unless the engine is running?

No, the impeller (along with the rest of the raw water pump) is located inside the outdrive.
Yes it needs to be running to pump water thru the engine.

When was the last time that both pumps were changed out?
