no water from my pee hole

I have a question for you. I have recently purchased a old 14 foot tin boat. It has a 1968 9.5 Evinrude. The motor looks in great shape and looks to have been serviced but the motor has not run in 15 plus years. I started it and no water comes out the pee hole, lol. I took the LU off and looked at the impeller and it looks ok, seems pliable. I have ordered a new impeller as they are cheap and a 9.5 is easy to change compared to my alpha one. To make a short story shorter, while waiting for the new impeller I tested the motor with out the thermostat and still no water coming out the pee hole (love saying that). My question is have I proved positive the impeller is the problem or is there something else I can check, keep in mind I have a new impeller on its way as I write this.....

Sometimes bugs can plug up the tube. Try disconnecting it from the block and running a wire through it to check.

cold be kidney stones

on a serious note, could be the prior owner overheated, ruined the impeller, then simply changed impellers without unclogging the rest of the system.

time to start flushing

Good idea as I have a few days of tinkering before the new part gets here. I'm thinking the easiest way would be remove the lower unit and flush separately.

I didn't know the OMC motors that old had pee holes. I didn't think they got them until the mid 70s?

I am no expert on the 1968 and my fathers 1976 had one. So if I am barking up the wrong hole let me know. As I mentioned the impeller looked ok but I think I will replace anyway.

so... you had me running back to the internet checking and great question by the way. Here is what I found (http://www.leeroysramblings.com/OMC_9.5.htm) the motor does not have a pee hole as per say but will exit the water from the exhaust. As I mentioned I removed the thermostat and to the best of my knowledge it should spit water as soon the the motor starts and does not need to warm up.

Yup, I used to have a late 60s 20 horse. No pee hole, but it would shoot a ton of water out of the exhaust.

My old Chryslers just spit out the exhaust up on the stem, had to turn the motor some to see it.

Fire it up and put your finger on various points on the head and cylinder, nothing should be hot just a bit warm.

You will always get water spitting out through the above water exhaust port, , idle relief I think they call it, even before the t-stat opens. You always need water to cool the exhaust system.

Are you running it in a barrel? Be advised you need to have the water pump itself submerged in the water. Not just the water intake. They are not self priming. Water level up to the lower motor mount is a good rule of thumb. Good luck!

Roffey, you are usually the guy answering not asking the questions. My 1st inclination is to stick a stiff piece of weed whacker line down the urethra. Spider nest in mine few times. I'd check to see if anything is spitting out the pee line, spitting water, steam etc? Not sure if a kicker that old has a thermostat.

edit: I should read all the posts before sticking my 2 cents in, no urethra per say, sorry Roffey. Here in Canada 2 cents is worth zero rounding it out to the lowest of 5 cents.

to answer a few questions... I have been running in a bucket and it is or at least starts out full. As far as I know you can not connect muffs to the LU, has to be a bucket of water? I checked the exhaust port and no water even after I removed the thermostat. The motor gets very hot, to hot to touch in fact so I am reluctant to run it for any length of time. I have a new impeller on the way and will install it regardless. I am going to try and see if there is a blockage. We have had a infestation of tent caterpillars at the lake, this is an understatement here. It is very possible a caterpillar has crawled up in side. While waiting for the new part I will take a weed wacker string (good idea Ironmaker) and see what reaming I can do.

You are correct, you cannot put muffs on that motor. I believe the water pickup is on the front side of the exhaust dump right by the propeller, should have a screen on it, , I think.

As previously mentioned make darn sure the water pump is submerged in water otherwise it will not pump. I'm sure you know that the water pump lives in that "bulbous" area about an inch or two above the anti ventilation plate, , cavitation plate as some call it. Make sure that's under water by an inch or two.
If after that the engine is still getting warm/hot, then either your impeller is faulty or you have a blockage.

I was running an early 60's Sea King 5 h.p. the other year that if the impeller was ever changed it was a long time ago. At idle the block got kind of warm, and when we reved it a little over idle things cooled down. Found a new impeller, installed it and she runs cool as a cucumber. Still amazes the heck out of me how nice those old motors run.

ya, this motor run excellent except it runs hot. It will make a great fishing boat and a learner boat for the grand kids. I will check for blockages and just fiddle with the motor until the new impeller arrives.

... and when I say bucket I mean this is a large bucket.

Thanks for all the replies

Sitting here on my day off and thinking of your advice I figured I would fill a garbage can full of water past where the lower unit connects, started the motor low and behold all is as it should be. Todd you were or are correct. As you already knew, the water pump is not self priming and I just did not have the water level high enough. Switching to a garbage can I was able to fill it and I get lots of water.

Thanks Todd, you da man...

How can you tell the exhaust is spitting water if it's in a bucket? Maybe reach down in the deep pockets and get a newer O/B. We don't want the kids dead in the water out on the lake. I'm not sure but I think you are in Ontario Roffey. I bet we have a running 9.9 here at the shop with your name on it for cheap. Mention Grand Children and us oldtimers here melt.

Here we go again, I need to read page 2 before posting. You are in Ontario and the old girl is running cool. A good ending, enjoy the new tinny with the kids.

I once saw a bumper sticker I will never forget, it said. IF THERE IS LIFE AFTER DEATH I WANT TO COME BACK AS MY PARENTS GRANDCHILD. Never more true words spoken. Enjoy this fabulous summer we are having here in Ontario Roffey. The best in many years.

Old Ironmaker , you are right on all accounts. The reason for the tinny is education for the new boaters. My feeling is if you hit rocks at 15-20 mph you will get wet but come home at the end of the day. My boat does 55 mph, hit a rock and it will be a really bad day.

Glad to help. A no-cost fix is always the best ending! :)
