no WOT with engine cover on....

1988 V4 110 HP.


After all frustration and rebuild I finally got to move accross the lake today.

I still had a similar problem (no WOT) until I removed the engine cover and then it ran fine.

Put the cover back on and it does the same thing. Needless to say I fished today with no cover but that's not a permanent option.

Any thoughts?

By the way, is 40 mph a decent speed for a V-4 110hp?
Is about what I expected, but hoped for more.

Either exhaust leak from the midsection, or the spark plug wires are too close to the latches on the cowl.

The large exhaust gasket between the gearcase and midsection is often the problem.

I think you need to determine if it is astetic or physical. Is the cover interfereing with something, or limiting air flow.

How to resolve that? Dunno. Would have to sit down with it and work thru it.

Things are caused, don't just happen. The cliche "S**t Happens" is a misnomer. Not so. It's caused.

Get a neighbor or not associated person to look over your shoulder.

Sometimes you would be amazed at what is obvious but you ignore or don't treat as revelant.

It is unlikely that you've done anything to affect air flow (unless you dropped a rag in the air intake in the bottom cowling or in the rear of the top cowling) so it is more than likely you are dropping a cylinder due to the cowling latch grounding out a coil (or two). I've seen a couple like this where the coils get put on backwards with the plug wire facing the cowling side. Should go with the plug wire facing the block...

WOW!!!

Just replaced the gasket, but the fit of the cover (on the back side) is right on the plug wires.

I'll get them straped down away from the latches before I go out in the morning!!!

Try this, it worked for me "ONCE"
With the engine running reach back and unlatch the cowling. If you have a high tension wire shorting out thru the spark plug cap you'll find out real quick.

I had the same problem after replacing Water deflectors and removing the head. The wire from the Power pack to the coil had a small crack or break that wasnt even visable. When I put the cover on it would short the cowling Latch I found that out the fun way when I went to remove the cover while it was running. If it is instant when you put the cover back on I am betting you have the same issue. When you put everything back together a wire is pinched, or has a break into it. It is more then likely one of the lower cylinders due to that is where latch is located. Look for the wire running to the Coil or the Plug wires. Lets us know the results. have you recently had the lower unit off and if so, do you remember an o-ring near the top of the driveshaft at the bottom of the splines?

I had a situation with a '94 200 Johnson where the red choke lever got flipped taking the cover on/off.
A shot in the dark. don't know if yours has the lever to even be hit on removal.
