I found this posted on another forum I frequent. Anyone heard of this? Sorry if it has already been posted, the search function isn't working too well.

Starting in the 2010 season all saltwater anglers (Age 16+) are required to be registered with NOAA. Registration is free.
If your fish commercially you do not have to register.
This is a federal thing, so its just like your licences, you gotta have it.

Im sure most of you know about NOAA. But for those who dont: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NOAA

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is a scientific agency within the United States Department of Commerce focused on the conditions of the oceans and the atmosphere. NOAA warns of dangerous weather, charts seas and skies, guides the use and protection of ocean and coastal resources, and conducts research to improve understanding and stewardship of the environment. In addition to its civilian employees, NOAA research and operations are supported by 300 uniformed service members who make up the NOAA Corps. (Intro from wiki page)

Notice the "free in 2010". I saw somewhere that NOAA is going to tack on $15-$25 to your fishing liscenses. These fees will also have to be paid by people who previously did not require liscenses to fish off piers and jetties.

This registration is only required for those who live in States that do not yet comply with the federal licensing guidelines. If your State is already in compliance you are exempt from this license.

Tough to get a conversation here without being political. Just hang on to your wallet.

This year, if you recreational fish in salt water from a boat, land, dock, jettie, etc:. you only are required to get a free license through the Feds. Next year the states will take over and you will begin to pay.

Commercial and charter boats will be exempt. WHY??? Because they already pay to salt water fish and have done so for years. I pay 200 bucks for a license to charter fish and everyone on my boat is covered by my license. If you come from another state you will not need a license to fish from a charter boat.

If you fish in Florida you will have to buy a salt water fishing license, they have been doing that for years. From what I read and hear most of the monies from Florida's fishing license go back into the fishery

In Mass. the monies go into the general fund to be used for what ever. This is what we in Mass. are upset about, it should go back into the salt water fishery for new or improve boat ramps, fish structure etc:.

A little clarification:

If the State you are fishing in requires a Saltwater fishing license you must purchase that State license. You can not get around a State?s licensing requirements by registering with NOAA.

If still in doubt if you need a license:

Fishermen would be required to be registered annually and NOAA will not charge a registration fee in the first two years. Beginning in 2011, the annual fee will be an estimated $15 to $25 per angler. Anglers under the age of 16 would be exempt from registering and fees would be waived for indigenous people, such as members of federally recognized tribes. NOAA?s Fisheries Service recognizes that many indigenous people fish for food as part of ancient cultural traditions.
