noise in outdrive

I have 2008 glastron, 5.0 with a sx-a outdrive. There is a rattling noise that seems to come from the top half of the unit. It is not where the ujoints are. It is not real loud but I need to see if there is something that is causing the noise. It is not a hard pounding noise, but a tin like rattling. I purchased the sx-a manual that shows exploded of all the components upper and lower. I took off the cover that is over the shifting linkage( 5 bolts) The top of the unit has a couple of bolts on it (also houses dip stick for the lower unit). Can taking this top off expose enough to see what is causing the noise? Can anyone help me step by step on this issue to check anything that would make the noise. I have another boat owner that is having the same noise.

It may or may not. If you're lucky it might show you the problem otherwise you'll have to pull the OD.

Does the noise go away if the boat goes in gear in the water? Drain the oil and check for debris. Pull the drive and check gimbel bearing and U-Joints.

I also have a Volvo SX with the idle knock or rattle. It does go away when it is above idle either in gear or not. My gimbal bearing was changed last year and while it was out I'm sure the dealer would have checked the u-joints.

Somebody has to have fixed this... right?

Mine sounds like that too. I can only hear it when I am behind the boat getting ready to ski (only time I notice it.) I figure it's some kind of Euro/Ducati thing.

To all of the above. It sounds like u-joints. When was the last time u guys had the drive off to grease them?

Okididokie .....Now here is a wrench in the spokes for me at least. THe manual says any boat made after 2007 ...the gimble bearing does not require greasing hmmmmmm.

If you're lucky enough to trailer your boat I would check the oil in the outdrive. If it's grayish and full of metal shavings you should remove the drive and replace the gaskets and o'ring between the top half and bottom half. The gimble and universal need inspection every year. That's my opinion. I got a noise in mine a few years ago and the top gear slipped and started to chew up. I got it out in time. Cost me a new outdrive instead of rebuilding it. It was cheaper.

I have taken the outdrive out on a Caravelle and greased the gimble and lubricated all that was needed. If I did that one would think I could handle taken a outdrive out of this Glastron. If anyone is familiar with step by step instructions please help. The manual is a little difficult and a pic is worth a 1000 words. Any help would be appreciated.

Not sure about the OP but the new gimbal they installed on mine is the new design that is not greaseable. I have checked the lube and is full and looks clear.

OP - I have the service manual for the Volvo SX. Sounds like you may already have it but if not PM me and I will send it to you - pdf.

Yeoppp all lubrication are kept full. I'm kinda a stickler on maintaining all lubricants. When one gives 30k for a boat that kinda inspires every aspect to taking care of it. I have only 46.91 hours on it. (2008) so far have been completely satisfied with performance. There is a 50 hour check obiviousley performed by the dealer to check the entire boat out. Maybe I can have them look at it then and have them listen to the rattling. Warrenty I don't know about being over 2 years hmmm Thanks everyone for the info. I will let you know about the outcome.
