Hello,
I purchased a boat last year got the water/fuel mixture just right
took it out on the lake and did fine but When turning the wheel left or right I got a knocking noise, in the center it seemed quiet(er) Last time out it seemed a bit worse (Surprise) I thought it was something in the lower end, I have another lower end so I was not worried, But, on this trip I was under power going straight for the most part, less than 20mph I expect and the boat stopped, engine died. The engine would start back up but would not engage in forward or reverse. As I waited for me friend to notice I was not following I went through the drive train path. Remembered u-joints in the upper and though I must have lost one.
Got the boat back, took the sterndrive off and to my surprise the u-joints looked good and I could feel no play Looked like oil leaking into bellows, Coupler doesn't look bad but the picture I took may not tell the whole story.
So if the coupler is good, Next I thought "Back to the lower end" Dog Clutch, Pinion Gear?
I have not tried turning the prop yet to see if it spins while in gear but will tonight.
What do you think? I am hoping not the coupler. I have had a coupler go before, Smoke, Burning Rubber smell, Horrible noise when cranking the engine. None of this on this incident. Motor is 5.7 It is a sea ray 24 ft cuddy cabin.
