ive got a lot of motor noise and would like to quiet things down a bit, from what i can tell most of the noise comes from the area behind where the dog house meets the enclosed area that has the batt. and hyd. pump. ive thought about filling the areas where i dont need access with spray foam but im not sure about fire safety, the other thought is aftermarket automotive noise panells but those are spendy and im not sure how affective they would be. thanks in advance- russ

This is just an idea, you said spendy so I assume money is at least a small factor but, could you use one of those egg crate looking matress pads?
maybe use some Super 77 spray adhesive to attach it.
They use something very similar in recording studios to dampen sound.
Don't know how it would stand up to heat but it should at least help a little.
Like I said, just an idea.

I'm looking at the same problem on my boat. I notice that the inside of the doghouse is covered with open cell foam, but the inside of the inboard transom cover is just plain wood with a little gelcoat on it. I was thinking about gluing in some indoor/outdoor carpet to deaden the sound a bit. Nothing that would have a potential to get into the intake or fall into the bilge, but something to absorb some of the sound.

In cars under the floor mats is usually a thick pad that is used to deaden road noise. Vans usually have a large amount in the rear portion where most can be found. Check out a junk yard and you may get as much as you want for minimal dollars. This stuff does work great for absorbing noise. I use it under my deck cover over my engine. It made a big difference. It is held in with spray adhesive.
