noise reduction

I have a pair of 175 Merc's, 1992 vintage, on my 25' boat. Althought the noise level is not bad, I would like to try and reduce the engine noise level. Has anybody tried removing the simple foam inside the motor cowling and replacing it with a newer high tech foam-lead material ? Is there room inside the cowling for additional sound deadening material ? Or does anybody have experieince in reducing the noise level from their outboards ?

Re: noise reduction

just a guess, but you might be able to try some spray on deadning stuff and then put the foam back over that. im not sure if that stuff would stand the heat but it should.(its made for the inside of cars) there is also some deadning that comes on a roll but that stuff is pretty spendy. you could probly find that spray stuff at a hardware store or probly a car audio store would be the best. either of those two things should deaden the sound

Or mount that Fishbox on the transom in front of the motors. Deflects the sound pretty good. Also you could get a bracket and move those babies out(may porpoise with a 25'r). Check motor bushings too. Deading the cowlings will only get you so far. Merc's of that era a just a little loud. For me, deflecting the sound worked the best.......
