Noise when shifting into gear

I did some searching and have done a lot of reading on here and couldn't find this question (which I thought this would have been answered, and prob. has).

Anyways, When I shift my boat into gear I hear this noise...Now bear with me... " tick tick tick tick, clunk!" then the prop spins with no noise. I have been told that I am perinoid (sp) about noises....

Just wanted to see if it was normal or not. I am gussing the sound is the grinding of the gears and than the clunk is it going in?

Thanks

Dean

How quickly are you shifting it into gear? If you go too slowly I think it would be normal to hear what you are hearing.

The ticking is the clutch dog being held in between neutral and forward. It is better to almost ram the engine into gear then shift slowly.

I do shift into gear kind of slowly. Maybe I will try to do it a little quicker. Kind of make sense i guess. I just never would have thought to jam it.

thanks for the replys.
