Just baught 84 searay w/ mercrusier 140, there is a noise like keys jingling when engine is running with the muffs on. Preaty sure noise is not coming from engine itself, more like in between engine and outdrive. Noise doesnt change much when engine is accelerated or put in/out of gear. Friend said possibly gimble bearing gone bad? thanks in adv for any help!

Re: noise

Pull the drive and check it out. May also be ujoints. Look for water (or signs of water) in the ujoint bellows. That is what nomally causes noisy (rusty) gimbal bearing and ujoints.

Re: noise

My guess is the exhaust flapper is rattling.....
For the price of a gasket you can pull off the riser & have a look.....
It would not hurt to inspect the riser anyway if the boat is new to you......;)
What, if any maintence has been performed?:)

Don, ya outdrew me!....:)
Pulling the drive & inspecting is always a good idea, especially since the boat is new to you.....
That gasket set is less than $10........
Don has a link to the service manual for your drive.....
If ya ask nice he will post it up....
Welcome to iboats, btw.....:)

I'll go with Haut on this 1,.......

If it's the Gimbel Bearing or U-joints,.... It Should follow the engine RPMs.....

Where as a Burnt up Flapper will just dance along at about Any speed, til the exhaust flow Holds it Open......

Re: noise

My guess is the bushings where the flywheel housing mounts to the transom plate are shot ....The bellhousing makes a real good ringing sound ....similar to when a starter stays engaged or someone tries to start their car when it's already running. Sorta random though...like ka-ding........ ka-ding ka-ding....ka-da-ding

THat sounds like the sound my 87 3.0 mercruiser is making . How can you tell the difference between the gimble and that?
