I removed my alpha I because it was making a grumbling noise when tuned hard left or right ot trimmed too high. Everything looked fine then I noticed the cradle that the lower unit staddles had the paint worn off the left side. The drive was not centered in the cradle! It had been this way for years. So if anyone hears any noise from their drive they should check this first and save a little time and $$$. One question, when installing the big square o-ring is it best to place it in the drive cavity or put it on the bearing housing?

big dee, use adhesive and glue it into the bell hsg. and by the "left" side ,are you standing behind the boat, facing it? wich would be the port side. because the stbd side is the one that usually has the paint worn off of it .

Re: Noisy outdrive

the worn paint is Not your problem, either the gimbal bearing is shot, or the u-joints are too loose... or both....

Re: Noisy outdrive

Johnkc, your correct it is on the starboard side. Bond-o I do not see this as a mechanical issue. whoever installed the outdrive originally did not make sure it was centered in the cradle before tighning the six bolts. I dont understand why mercruiser did not use dowel pins or at least remove the slop clearence.
