Hi,

I loaned my 1978 9.9 Evinrude to my brother for his vacation; it turns out he used Quaker State 2-cycle oil, non-TCW-3; the label specifies it's for air-cooled engines in chain saws, weed eaters etc. but doesn't mention outboards. Will using this oil cause damage? I haven't used the motor since my brother finished using it; I don't dare to until I have some idea if any damage was done. Thanks,
John

I'm by no means an expert, But I would think if you start using tcw-3 again now, there wont be any issues. At least it wasn't straight gas! :) In '78 were they just using straight 30 weight to mix with? Or was that a lot earlier?

In my youth I ran Grandpa's old outboard for several years with anything I could scrounge out of Dad's cabinet in the garage.

10W, 30W, 50W and even 10W30....LOL. Didn't seem to phase it. When I got to college I could afford a couplabucks so I switched to Pennzoil TCW and that's what did her in. Took a lot of cleaning, then switched to Evinrude oil and that made her OK again. Never again Pennzoil!

She's a 1955 and still running to this day without a rebuild. Sooo, don't worry!
