Non Skid deck coating

after thinking long and hard about how i wanted to finish my deck i have concluded that i do not want to reinstall carpet or marine vinyl. lots of people will be in and out of the boat for wakeboarding/swimming so i intend for the deck to be wet most of the time. so no carpet, and no vinyl (im afraid of water getting trapped underneath even though im glassing the top and bottom side of the deck).

Alot of people talk about durabak and i was mainly considering this. frisco mentioned he used it, then applied the smooth durabak over it and it was easier on the feet, and to clean.

I guess my question is whats the big difference between durabak and all the stuff iboat sells. i know durabek is 100+ for a gallon. and most of the non skid stuff on iboats is 50+ (Interlux interdeck non-skid paint, skid-no-more, awlgrip) most of them are at least 25% off.

Ive heard alot of good about durabak, but i havent heard or read much about any other non skid poly or epoxy coating. just durabak vs carpet, truck liner, garage floor epoxy, vinyl ect.

So if anyone has used any boat specific non skid coating please chime in with opinions.

Ideally what im looking for is a mild or fine non skid, something that wont scrape up your skin, and is easy to clean. im looking for that texture that new boats that dont have carpets have, its almost like tiny dimples, almost like a golf ball, ill see if i can find a picture online. I know this is only achievable in a mold during the boat building process. I want to find a non skid or non skid additive that wont feel or look like stucco or sandpaper...or at the very least be minimally abrasive. Possibly a soft rubber additive instead of a hard material

right now im leaning towards Durabak, or Awlgrip fine or Interlux interdeck

If i cannot find something soft...which i think might be the case, i will put down the first layer with non skid then do a second layer without non skid to raise the low spots, which will reduce the traction and the roughness of the floor.

Thanks for the help ahead of time!

Interlux bilgekote is on sale for 50, maybe i could just add the fine awgrip to that. Is Bilgekote stronger than regular gel coats? or is it just more chemical resistant? or is it all just marketing bullcrap?

Sani-Tred. This is not an endoresement, just what I am ***** deep in the middle of doing. I've gotten the primer coat on, and the LRB patches on. May have mixed the LRB incorrectly, I added ~10 % xylene while I was activating instead of after I activated. Was still gooey after 6 hours, supposed to cure in 4. I'll find out here shortly if i screwed it up or not.
Plan is to apply LRB entirely over 1st prime, let it dry and apply the final coat of UV protected stuff. Applies very easily. Probably more expensive than I could have gotten away with, but I like the way it sticks and feels so far. Obviously won't know for some time how it holds up over time.

I went with Interlux 2 part primer, 3 coats. Then 3 coats of 2 part perfection with their grip additive in the 2nd coat. It's hard as nails and has just enough grip but doesn't hold dirt. It's not cheap though.

I just responded to your pm on the Durabak. I would say the durabak is great, but I would not put the smooth over the top. The "bumps" in the durabak do not hurt your feet. The thing I did not like about not having carpet is the noise. The carpet cuts it way down, and it sounded like we were in a race boat as the water and engine noise just transfered right through the hull. I will be using gellcoat on this boat with snap in carpet.

I don't think bilgekote is a gel coat at all. It is a single stage enamel paint with "special additives". Gel Coat has a activator.

Awl grip PL is the best ( most expensive ) with "grip-tex". I like to add med-course 50-50. apply with roller.

The application needs to be addressed before you put Paint grip on there..

The surface should be void free and even color ( base color would be optimal/suggested ).

Dunno about the durabek type products..

Hope you have better luck with the sanitred than I did. I put sanitred on my houseboat deck and durabak on the rear upper deck. The sanitred is coming off already not even 1 year. same prep for both. THe durabak is like the day I put it on. Tough as nails.

I used this http://www.lowes.com/pd_83073-4-009...uct_quantity_sold|1&facetInfo=$25 - $50|Other on my last boat deck. I just sold the boat last year after three years of use with no problems with it at all. Only spot I had any chips is where I droped the battery. It was about the size of a dime and I just touched it up. At $25 a gallon, It worked very well for me. preped the deck by sanding it down then wiping it with acetone before painting.

There are many products outlined on the internet that will serve your purpose. Check AmesResearch.com for non-skid elastomeric coatings that can be used on balconies and roof decks--and available at Ace Hardware.

You've also got products like Rhinoliner that spray or roll on truck beds--some of which are not as rough as Rhinoliner. You can Google them.

Re: Non Skid deck coating

I actually just used gelcoat thickened with fumed silica to about a ketchup consistency. Rolled it out and added more until texture was what I desired. Then added hardner and rolled it out on my floor. I bought 1 gal. Enough for 3 coats. I rolled out 1 layer of non thickened gelcoat. Then 2 textured layers. It came out beautiful. Doesn't hold dirt, super soft on feet. No sand paper feel. And is non slip. Very happy with my results.

Gelcoat only costs me $60 a gallon which is cheaper than most other products. And it's bullet proof
