Re: Non skid replacing carpet and more ? ?

No, unless you glass over it, won't hold up well, just putting a primer and non skid over it won't help. Without the resin there may have been options, not great ones, but possible primers and paints, or epoxy that may have held up, now that the resin is applied you need to continue and put down a least one layer with glass. I wish I would have looked at this sooner so you could have at least had some warning before you started.

So glass sheets over the entire deck? Thats a lot of resin/sheets but can be done. Are you thinking it is going to crack and peel? I was going to sand-put on another coat of resin-sand, and then non skid. Are you sure its going to fail? I think it will get air bubbles under the glass and be worse off???

Got the non-skid shipped in, going to sand the resin and put another coat on, sand more lay down a primer... and then non skid.... It should be fine for years on end, If it cracks or peels I can just easily touch it up.

From where you stand now I think you would have been better off just putting down several heavy coats of a good epoxy paint with some no skid additive in the top coat. The problem is that the resin isn't good at holding paint, and ads no strength by itself. It will help water proof the wood for a while, but it will most likely crack. You may not see the brakes in the resin if it soaked in that well. I'd sand what you have and put down a good heavy coat of epoxy paint if nothing else, and probably plan on keeping that touched up.

Resin and glass mat would have been the right answer, then a good coat of paint or tinting the final gel coat. There's a few spots in that plywood that look suspect to me as well.
I wouldn't put any more plain resin down, it's not going to do anything for you, sand what you have now and if you don't plan to resin in a layer of good glass mat, then go right to the paint.
I take it from your posts your only trying to prolong it's life a bit not restore it, which is fine, but the coats or plain resin are a waste of money better spent on either paint or a future, more proper fix.

for a cheap effective non skid i would recommend the hercu-liner from jc whitney. its $80 for a kit that has about a gallon. that would do an entire truck bed. you can also buy individual cans of if for cheaper.

If you don't want to use a layer of glass you should sand all of the resin off and use epoxy, as the resin layer will be the weak link. It doesn't like to stick to wood all that well when used without glass, so no matter what you use over it, it will fail in about the same time frame as the resin alone.

If the wood is in fair condition right now, then doing it correctly will add many years to it's life. If the wood is on it's last legs, or you only want to make it through the next season, then do nothing, or use a cheap porch paint and throw some sand in it for a nonskid surface.

Ok, It was not my idea to resin the deck, My friend brian is house contractor that thinks he knows his way around everything. This is the non-skid paint I ordered in, blue non-skid epoxy. So should I just sand the resin off, and primer it, and then lay this epoxy resin non-skid?

I think what people here are saying is you should just reglass the entire deck. If the wood is in good condition, this would reinforce and strenthen the deck, avoiding any problems in the future. Since the floor is already there, this should not be too difficult at all. It will prevent the deck from cracking and keep that new paint looking good.

A little more work now will prevent you from redoing it next year.

Yea I have decided to glass over the entire deck, any pointers on laying the sheets down? Air bubbles are my main concern.

Pre-mixed epoxy ain't real epoxy.

Using carpet will reduce the life of the floor dramatically, the wood will just stay wet all year. At this point you have a few options to still do it right and it will last. The cost won't be that much different.

You guys have to remember this is just a old bayliner fishing boat, But I do want this to last a at least 5 years or so. Is this non-skid going to be OK? I heard this was a really good brand of non-skid and i should have 0 problems with it. Carpet is my last option, I am still going to lay glass sheets down and use this non-skid I got.

Meaning it will not last?

Likely not, and not what you're expecting from and epoxy. Epoxy's strength occurs as it cures, having been mixed with a hardner at the time of use. "Pre-mixed" epoxy is likely a misnomer since the hardness occurs by the chemical reaction of the two parts mixing.

Epoxy is also not UV resistant, so you'd then cover with something, be it paint, vinyl, carpet, etc.

Disclaimer....I am NO boat expert or epoxy expert, but I have to promote this site in that I've read much over a few months and the knowledge you can pick up here is great. Epoxy and general sealing of wood on a boat is a popular topic and you can locate many many posts on the subject and compare what is said and who's saying it. Great info here!!

Re: Non skid replacing carpet and more ? ?

Single part products typically aren't as good as two component products of the same type, they still may be good, but not as good. That nonskid paint will most likely work well and it will be the least important factor in how the floor holds up.

Wood expands and contracts a great deal with temperature and humidity changes, let alone getting totally wet. the problem with just polyester resin is that it has little strength when used alone, plus it doesn't hold up to the movement of the wood, so it cracks letting water in. This results in more movement, more cracking, more water, then rotten wood.

Using glass in the next layer you put down will take care of that problem. The nonskid paint used will mostly be cosmetic, it will need to hold the sand or small chunks of whatever this product uses for the nonskid in place, but that's about it. So if you need to touch it up later to look good that's a simple thing to do.

Re: Non skid replacing carpet and more ? ?

Thanks for the help here, actually learning from this. I am going to the point loma area tomorrow to pick out some glass material. Any recommendations on the glass sheets (like kind to buy) for this? On my list is a F-glass roller, more resin, and fiberglass mat material.

You can use mat or cloth to cover the floor, mat will stick better, but won't be as strong and will be heavier. Cloth will be lighter, stronger, but won't stick as well. Either one will work fine, cloth will cost more, but will use less resin, that's why it will be lighter.
