Non-Skid Tape

Hello All,
I recently aquired a 15' tri-hull that is becoming more of a project than I had intended (I know, welcome to boating). Anyway, the carpet is a must replace. It is a center console with a casting deck on the bow. I don't care for the unfinished edges that carpeting the bow would leave me with, as the deck/gunwales are a solid, molded unit. I'm wondering about painting the deck, and then applying Non-Skid tape strips 1"-2" appart.
Will this hold up for years? Will it be a good non-slip surface?
All thoughts or comments are appreciated!
Chris

I think that would work, OF. Those things can be abrasive on bare skin, though.

Another thought is a bedliner type coating. No slip, no scrape.

Re: Non-Skid Tape

Boat stores sell paint for decks that has microballoons in it for non-skid.
It's ok on the feet & would cover up the old carpet glue stains.

Do you think that after a good sanding and painting the glue stains will still show through?

While I'm here (on the deck), any good ideas on where to put the pesky pedel for the trolling motor?
Thanks,
Chris

I don't know. It comes in a bunch of colors. I know someone that used a buff color similar to glue, but not over glue.
It's opaque so I think it should cover.
Try Interlux paints.

Marine nonskid paint has very small granuals and doens't give good non skid properties.

Here's what I do and it works great. Buy a 50lb bag of playground sand for $3 from HomeDepot. Add a few oz to the deck paint and stir well. Roll one coat on and follow up with 2 more coats of paint without sand.

Bill,
What kind of paint do you use? Since the deck and gunwales are one piece, I plan to use the same paint for both. Will this work? Should I just tape off the deck area for the initial sandy application?

You can also put a flattening agent in the paint if you want to kill the gloss, if it isn't a flat paint.

Re: Non-Skid Tape

I've used sand (and sawdust too)with epoxy and poly resins, Pettit Easypoxy, several different Interlux single part paints and the last time (a few weeks ago) an experiment trying West Marine SeaGloss semi-gloss white. I did West Paint because it is cheap and needs nothing added to take the gloss away. The boat is old and a plain "fisherman" finish to hide all the imperfections was all I wanted. SeaGloss is made by International (who makes Interlux) and I like the way it brushed (thinned) and covered. I taped off the sand area and painted it first, then pulled the tape and painted the topcoats later.

Try duraback.

It's made with recycled cartires and is ver easy to apply. I put it on my 19' bluewater after I tore up the old carpet.
Here's what I did.
1. Tore out old carpet.
2. sanded off glue with drill motor and wire wheel
3. wipe floor down with xylene.
4. paint with duraback
5. Go fishing the next day!
It was really that simple. I live in bare feet and it is real soft stuff but also very non-skid.
Just spray down the deck and hit it with a soapy brush is all the clean up needed
The one drawback is the price about $120 per gallon. one gallon was all I needed and I put on 2 thick coats.
Good luck.

Hey Blue,
Did you apply it up the sides at all? If so, how far? Was your floor completely smooth before the application?

Hey bluewater19,
I almost tried that stuff but wasn't sure how hard it would be to refinish later. They sent a sample and it looked good. How long has your been on?

bp

Bluewater,
What color did you pick & how is it in the sun w/ bare feet.
How is it to sit on. I often have kids sitting on the floor?

Re: Non-Skid Tape

Oregonfish,
My floor is made of plywood covered with fiberglass. It is pretty smooth until I hit it with the wire brush to remove the carpet glue. I only did the floor and not up the sides. This coating will have no problem being rolled on the sides if you choose to do so. The most labor intensive part is the prep. The product comes with a special roller and very good directions.

BillP,
I did mine last year in the spring and it has held up very well.I think that refinishing will be very easy. Just scuff it up and reapply. I cover my boat but one time left the cover off for a few days and of corse the boat was parked under a tree. The bird cr*p came off very easy with just a soft brissle deck brush and a little powdered laundry soap. makes for very easy clean up.

ED,
The color I used was dark blue. It turns out it maches blue marine carpet pretty good!
It is more like a very thick rubber membrane than a normal hard truck bedliner. The floor is very nonslip and it is fine for bare feet and sitting on, it gets warm on hot days but not burn your feet hot. I have a 4 year old who runs around in bare feet and has even fallen down on it. It is a very good product that works as advertised.

Thanks for the info.
It's something I haven't seen done & never would have considered. I am replacing the floor this spring.

Re: Non-Skid Tape

I am going to use carpet on mine. Looks better and the fish we catch we usually put back! There is an area(s) on the rear of the boat people step on to get in that might need a non-slip. That Sea deck looks strange to me. I think I will use the sand method.

I can always grind it off and do something else.

seadek?

Or you could go to wallyworld and buy about 32 square foot of something awfully similar to seadek for about the same as you'd pay for 1 square foot of seadek... ;)
