Re: Non Starting Mercruiser 120

what would pulling the outdrive accomplish?

Ayuh,... At this point,...
You have No Idea as to whether the Motor is Seized, or the Outdrive is Seized....

1. remove the outdrive
2. See if engine will turn over
3. if the engine still will not turn, then the engine is locked up.
4. if the engine now turns with the outdrive off, then the drive is probably the problem.
5. If drive is suspected, grab the ujoint shaft and see if it will turn.
6. If it will not turn, the drive is locked up.

Re: Non Starting Mercruiser 120

i moved the motor by hand, put on my new starter and hooked the battery up and to my astonishment, i anxiously turned the key only to hear a click at the slave.

i proceeded to test the slave with my test light and got light on all the terminals, and im still not getting power to the starter.

before i had a 3 prong starter and this one has 4.

i put the red, orange and red from the battery on to the left main terminal and the orange with red stripe on the upper and innermost small terminal. i believe this is the correct way of wiring this starter but i cannot figure where the problem may be.

i did swap out the slave early last week and when hitting the key i did get power to the starter and thats how i figured out that the starter was bad.

what could be wrong?

any help would be certainly appreciated.

SO, What's the current condition of your battery and connections??? Do you have a charger hooked up??- Sometimes gotta go back to basics.

Re: Non Starting Mercruiser 120

i wire brushed the leads on the battery, although it was brand new last year and never used, it was housed indoors ever since and charged fully last week.

all of the connections that i pulled off of the starter were wire brushed before reinstalling.

all of the connections that were changed on the slave were also cleaned before installation.

i cleaned up the rotor, and changed the plugs but did not replace the wires.

the kicker is, i was getting power to the starter last week with no changes since to the slave. could it be that the starter was wired incorrectly?

would anything happen if i changed the position of the striped wire coming off of the small pole on the starter to the other side in case its wired backward? i dont want to hurt anything.
