Sir, you win my thanks.

I'm tinkering on a project boat that I bought in December. The previous owner neglected the water pump and cooked the motor & drive. This explains why I found these behind my prop...

Sorry, wrong.... That is, in fact, HALF a water shutter.... :D :D :D

If the drive is 'gen I', then pressure test the water pocket cover too... If it was run any length of time without water (and to burn up the shutter like that it would have been running quite a while without water) then the water pocket cover will be distorted and the gasket could be leaking... A leaking water pocket cover gasket would allow exhaust gasses into the cooling water and cause more overheating issues...

Re: Noob Question: Name That Part

You are absolutely correct. Good catch.

Flipped the upper unit last night and (as predicted) the water pocket cover looked well baked.

Question: My mechanical know-how tells me the previous owner cooked this boat quite well. (see attached image) In your experience, how much neglect does it take to cause these to melt down like this? Do most water pump's shred like this? Or is this a case of some serious neglect?

At a minimum, the motor has a blown head gasket as well. Plans are already in place to disassemble the upper end of the motor and freshen it up with a gasket set. Hopefully those cast iron GM heads didn't warp....or melt the valves.....or burn a hole in a cylinder.

Ayuh,... Real serious neglect...

If it's been over heated as Bad as you think,...
A complete rebuild is probably in order,...
The rings will also be Shot...
Have the heads tested, measured, 'n checked for cracks..

+1 for some serious neglect, and also the piston rings will having lost their temper (no pun intended :D)... I'd also be looking closely at everything in the exhaust line south of the elbows, especially the rubber bits (the tubes the join the elbows to the 'benders' and the benders to the exhaust pipe). and because of the heat involved, once the engine is out, pull the exhaust pipe and check its 'O' ring.

Re: Noob Question: Name That Part

So for discussion sake, let?s say this drive was well cooked. (Evidence points to that) Being that the drive housing is aluminum, do I need to worry about warpage of any finished mating surfaces?

The water pump is an isolated unit and shouldn?t be affected by warpage?..
the lower unit is submerged in lake water for cooling, so it shouldn?t warp?
The ?cooked? water pocket cover is plastic and gasket sealed

From what I can tell, there really aren?t any locations (in the drive) whose tolerances are so tight that warping would present a problem?

Thoughts?

O-ring? Which o-ring are you specifically referring to?

The rubber seal between the exhaust Y and the transom shield. It's not exactly an O in shape, but an O in cross section.
Looks like #13 in the drawing below.
