Normal Operating Temp?

I have a 1992 175 hp Merc Outboard with 700 hours on it. Wide open the temp gauge sits around 145-150 deg. F. If I slow the rpm's down to 1500-2000 - say for trolling, the temp gauge goes to 200 and I am concerned that this is too high. I always have water coming from the 'pee' hole. What is the normal op temp for this engine?

Re: Normal Operating Temp?

What is the temperature sender measuring? Metal or water?

145-150F is excellent but that sounds like water temperature not metal! Mine runs at 200-215F WOT and about 180F at trolling speeds (head metal temperatures)...

Have you checked the poppet valve, it could be stuck open and allowing water to be dumped out of the block at lower rpms under 3000...

Re: Normal Operating Temp?

I have no idea if that is metal or water. It's the dash gauge and I am inclined to think that it is the water temp. At least that's what it says in the owners manual. Oddly enough the owners manual only refers to overheating and not operating temps. I called the previous owner and he says I need to replace the impeller - that maybe it has set up funny and aged from heat. And it may not pump sufficient water at lower rpms. If 200 deg. at trolling speeds and 150 deg at WOT is okay then I will not worry. I just don't want to prematurely wreck the engine trolling and running it at 200 deg. fro any length of time. I will have to get a service manual to see how to check the pop valve and replace the impeller. Is the impeller hard to replace?

Find the temp sensor and remove it and see what it is measuring. It's most likely under one of the top spark plugs (measuring metal) but make sure of that... No problem removing it. If it's not there check the water lines, or at the top of the block (measuring water). One single wire will lead to it, mine is colored tan with a blue stripe. That wire goes directly to the guage.

If you are measuring water temps, 200F is way too high. And since it happens at lower rpms, I suspect the poppet vlave is stuck open. It is located just under the switchboxes on the bottom starboard side of the block. It's an egg or eight shaped plate held with a few bolts. Under the outer plate is a gasket, diaprham, another plate, another gasket, poppet valve with a spring and some grommets fixed to the block. Remove all but the grommets and check for debri that would keep it from closing. It's designed to stay closed under 2500-3000 rpms and open at higher rpms to release water and reduce pressure. If it is stuck open at low rpms, you are dumping needed cooling water out of the block, causing it to overheat.
You should also replace the impeller, so you know that it is ok. You will have to pull the lower unit off to get to it... Do a search on replacing impeller. A manual is in need if you haven't done this before, but it's not very difficult.

Are you getting an overheat alarm?
